First Grade News
April 26, 2013
First grade has had an exciting week. Monday was Earth Day. To celebrate we learned ways that we can reduce, reuse, and recycle to conserve resources.
Great Websites
Our district has purchased the right for us to use a wonderful website called Moby Max. There are several subjects and games to play on it. Here at school we have taken the placement test in math. The website address is www.mobymax.com. Your child can access this website at home. Once you get to the website, there is a button that has sign in. Your child’s log on name and number is the same one used for taking A/R tests. Another good website is epa.gov/recyclecity. We think the students will enjoy these two websites. J
Spirit Week
Since our students in the intermediate grades are preparing for K-PREP testing, next week is spirit week. Each day we will be dressing up. We look forward to seeing you in your “spirit” outfits.

Thank you for sending refreshments for our Easter Party. Although the weather was wet, we still had lots of fun “hunting” eggs and playing games. We are constantly amazed at the generosity of our first grade parents.
Continue to collect box tops and can tabs. PTO uses the money from box tops to purchase things we need in our classrooms, and the can tabs are taken to St. Jude’s.
We are out of Kleenex and glue. Girls please bring a box of tissues, and boys please bring a glue stick for our classroom.

Our first grade students have been working extremely hard this week. In math we are adding and subtracting two digit numbers. You need to continue to help your child learn the basic addition and subtraction facts. Two other concepts we are learning in math are telling time and counting coins. Please continue to practice at home on these concepts.
One skill all students need to improve in is reading fluency. If your child is struggling, have him/her read the same passage multiple times. Your child needs to pause at the end of sentences. I tell them they need to take a breath. The students are taking A/R tests on their reading stories and their library books. When your child reads a book to you, it really helps comprehension if you ask questions.
Easter Party
Our Easter party is Friday, March 29th. The party time is 1:30-2:30. However, our egg hunt will be earlier in the day. Please send eggs and a basket with your child that morning.
Spring break is April 1st – 5th.
